Camp Hobé Kids
Camp Hobé offers special psychosocial support programs for kids being treated for cancer and similarly-treated disorders, as well as their families, through summer camps and family outings. Our goal is to create an atmosphere that enhances self‑esteem, fosters independence and friendships, and creates a feeling of belonging.
Camp Hobé serves kids and families from Utah and the surrounding area served by Primary Children’s Hospital. We give these families the opportunity to participate in activities just like those who are not affected by these terrible diseases. Our programs provide medical and psychosocial supervision to ensure kids are safe physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Camp Hobé is passionate about improving our participants’ overall mental well-being. Our programs are run by staff and volunteers who are trained to supervise and guide participants in activities that challenge, support, and grow their physical, mental, emotional, and social health.
Our team will match your donation dollar for dollar, up to $10,000!
Last summer, seven-year-old Lincoln and his twin brother, Logan, packed their bags for Camp Hobé Kids Week, their first time sleeping away from home and family. Because they had participated in Camp Hobé day camps in past years, Lincoln’s family knew that they would be in good hands and that camp would mean a break from the hospitals, treatments and appointments that typically fill the days of a cancer patient.
Both boys love being outdoors and are interested in nature, bugs in particular, so they thrived at camp where they were able to go on bug hunts and even try something new: the zip line! Lincoln and Logan’s mom is especially grateful that at camp, children with medically complex situations get to spend a week just being kids and having fun.
Upon arrival, Lincoln bonded with Devon, a Camp Hobé counselor and former camper herself. Devon remembers what it was like to come to camp from her home in Idaho for the first time as a newly-diagnosed teen. She, too, was a little nervous to stay away from home but quickly formed connections with others who were going through similar challenges and appreciated that she got to feel “normal” amongst peers who also had scars, ports and worried parents. Like Lincoln, Devon is also a twin whose sibling was able to attend camp with her while she was in treatment, an experience she says allowed her sister to meet other kids who had siblings with cancer and to have the focus on her for a bit, too. Devon and her sister attended camp for four years, after which Devon began training to be a counselor. As a counselor today, Devon says it is “amazing to give back to the camp that gave us so much and help ‘bring the magic.’ Lincoln is the happiest kid I’ve ever met and his laugh is contagious.”
Camp Hobé Teen Week is a five-day overnight camp offered to 12-19 year olds, filled with games, crafts, swimming, archery, hikes, theater and more. Spending the week together gives campers the chance to build community and lasting friendships with other teens like them who are living with illness.
Here are some thoughts from past campers shared about their experience at camp:
- “Camp Hobé has become a place I attend for a week but I think about for a year. Camp is full of so many different people but we all have something the same. Hobé is a place we can join together with support and love. I miss my friends so much but I am forever grateful I met them because of camp. As I continue to learn and grow I will always think back to the things I have learned at this sweet place Camp Hobé. Thank you Hobé”
- “During camp, I felt like I was able to be myself. I was able to step out of my comfort zone and talk to so many awesome people. I’ve seen myself blossom out and be so much more energetic than I have ever been at camp. I love Hobé!”
- “Here the patient isn’t always the spotlight. Siblings and patients alike can share their experiences. Everyone can work at their own pace. Everybody has been so nice this year. It was a great year and I hope next year will be just as awesome!”
